SC 1000 Laboratory Safety for Students<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At SA国际传媒, the safety of our students, faculty and staff is our number one priority when working in the science laboratory. Accidents aren\u2019t always predictable; the best way to protect yourself is to be prepared. This booklet will help you make the most of the college\u2019s state-of-the-art labs and equipment while ensuring your own safety and that of those around you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hazard Communication<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hazard communication is simply letting you know of the potential risks you could encounter when working in the science laboratory. To ensure a safe lab, always follow the guidelines provided in your Student Safety Contract. Knowing the potential dangers in a lab before you enter the room is the best way to prevent accidents and injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rules for a Safe Lab<\/h2>\n\n\n

  1. Dress properly for lab: long pants, lab coat, safety goggles, gloves and protective footwear are required<\/strong> (no sandals, flip-flops or high-heeled shoes).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. No food, drinks or gum are allowed in the lab at any time. And, as with the rest of the college campus, SA国际传媒 science labs are entirely tobacco-free<\/strong> (no cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars or chew).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Familiarize yourself with the locations and procedures for using emergency equipment<\/strong> (eye wash, safety shower, fire extinguisher, spill kits, etc.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Long hair or bangs, loose jewelry or clothing should be secured so they don\u2019t get in the way of lab work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Listen carefully for changes in lab procedures and additional safety precautions<\/strong> described by your instructor, and ask if you don\u2019t understand something.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Notify your teacher immediately of any known medical conditions<\/strong> (allergies, medications, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Don\u2019t engage in horseplay or rough housing at any time in the lab.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. Dispose of chemicals and waste material in properly labeled waste containers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  9. Notify the instructor of any accidents, spills or injuries<\/strong> as soon as possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  10. Be courteous; leave your area clean<\/strong> for the next person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  11. Notify your instructor immediately of any emergencies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  12. For fires and large chemical spills, evacuate and call 911<\/strong>. With fire, if possible close fume hood and turn off power.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Material Safety Data Sheets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are a prime source of hazard communication. They contain information regarding the procedures for handling, storing and disposing of hazardous substances. They keep users informed of potential chemical dangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
